JAMMU, Jan 21: The Department of English, Central University of Jammu (CUJ) organized a one-day national seminar on ‘In Translation: Issues and Contexts’. The seminar deliberated upon the issues and contexts in translation with reference to nationalism, culture, linguistics and texts.

The Keynote speaker, Prof  Sumanyu Satpathy, Head, Department of English, University of Delhi, spoke on the topic “Translating Nonsense.”  He called ‘Nonsense’ a tenth Rasa and talked about the importance of translation and  the problems encountered while translating ‘Nonsense-texts’ like Alice in Wonderland.

Prof  Nandini Bhattacharya, Head, Department of English, Central University of Jammu, spoke on “Nationalism and Translation.” She deliberated upon the role of translation in the Gandhian resistance movement in Africa and in the struggle for Swaraj in India.
Earlier, Raj Thakur introduced the theme of the Seminar while   Neena Gupta Vij gave a brief introduction about the history of Dogri language and said that the seminar was a prelude to a major project the Department of English has undertaken to translate Dogri and Gojri narratives into English.
The national seminar began with the introductory remarks by Prof  Deepak Raj Gupta, Academic Administrator, CUJ.

Other  eminent speakers were Dr  Vandhana Sharma, Director In-Charge SMVDU,   Amitabh Vikram Dwivedi  from. SMVDU and   Sudhir Singh, Assistant Prof. Government Degree College, Udhampur .
The paper reading session was followed by a panel discussion by Prof  Sumanyu Satpathy, Prof  Nandini Bhattacharya and other participants from CUJ, University of Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra.

The afternoon session witnessed paper readings by faculty members, research scholars and students. The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks and distribution of certificates to the participants.
